When BrooklyNYC launched in 2006, we decided that we will make all of our clothing environmentally friendly. To accomplish this we first had to find some high quality organic t-shirts to print on. We found a very high quality organic t-shirt that is made in USA. The organic cotton shirts that we use come in only one color, Natural, but it's 100% organic, so we can't complain. We are very pleased with our green t-shirts because they are amazingly soft. They are a made out of smooth 4.3 oz 100% organic cotton.

Why we DON'T use PVC plastisol inks..

After finding a nice organic shirt to print our green t-shirts with, we now needed an ink. After some research, we realized that the "regular" plastisol ink that most clothing is printed with is very toxic. PVC plastisol ink is not only toxic for humans, but it is very harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. In our research, we discovered that PVC plastisol ink was banned in Europe because it's so bad for the environment. We even found out that a baby can be permanently damaged by licking on a t-shirt made with "normal" PVC Plastisol inks. This is alarming because like previously mentioned, most t-shirts printed and sold in America are made with this toxic ink. These” Normal" PVC Plastisol t-shirts are extremely popular in America because it's cheaper to print t-shirts with than non-pvc clothing. When screen printing t-shirts, water-based tends to dry in the screen, therefore it's not practical for mass produced clothing. Non-PVC plastisol ink is new to the market, but it tends to cost a lot more that PVC inks. But the tides are changing.

Non-toxic Water Based Inks

We at BrooklyNYC found a non-toxic water-based ink to print our green clothing with. Our Water-based inks have an amazingly soft hand, and can be ironed over. Yes, our t-shirt prints can be ironed over. Water based ink is more expensive, more time consuming, and harder to produce t-shirts with, but we feel that it a small price to pay to make our BrooklyNYC Clothing line GREEN.
